Learning together, we grow kind hearts and healthy minds

Hummingbird Class

FLOURISat home.

Home learning is designed to sit alongside FLOURISH giving the children a choice of activity and how they wish to present their learning. We are always amazed at their wonderful pieces of work however elaborate or simple they are. What is even more amazing is the way the children present and share their their work with their peers. The confidence and the feeling of proudness they have answering questions and receiving praise.

Each term the children will choose one activity from the grid to complete.

TERM 5

In Science we are learning about life cycles. We have been observing real caterpillars as they transform into butterflies. They are currently at the chrysalis stage.

We also have some chicken eggs in an incubator in our classroom and we are looking forward to observing how they will hatch and change over time. Today we all saw the first chick hatch out of its egg. This was amazing to see.

In literacy we are reading ‘How to catch a star’ by Oliver Jeffers. We have made our very own stars and are building on our writing journey to write a set of instructions of how you can catch our special stars.

Our lovely chicks!

Our LOCKDOWN memories for the time capsule.

Term 4

The children have been immersed in our topic exploring the question, ‘Could a dinosaur live in our village?’ We ended Term 3 with our virtual dinosaur parry workshop with the children learning at home and in school coming together to share their learning so far.

We celebrated World Book Day by reading the wonderful story ‘Colourful darkness’ and decided to make our own magical adventures using clay and story boxes. We enjoyed making our reading dens and sharing stories together.

Since being back in school, the children have loved having ‘King Rex’ the Trex come and stay with us in our classroom and it encouraged some wonderful story telling and role play.  The children also discovered a dinosaur egg in the classroom and were delighted when it finally hatched. Although the dinosaur made a swift escape, they followed footprints and looked for clues around the School to uncover what it was. This led them to writing ‘Look out’ posters to warn the rest of the School that there could be a dinosaur on the loose!

The children have also been busy designing and making their own dinosaur finger puppets, sewing a running stitch to attach the material together. We love how bright and colourful they are.

                                                                        Term 2

We have been very busy, working hard in Hummingbird class. We have really enjoyed our topic, ‘Are all villages the same?’ using some great texts to immerse ourselves in our learning. We wrote some wonderful diary entries taking inspiration from the story ‘Lila and the secret of the rain’ and then were very creative when making and packing a suitcase for Sunny the Meerkat after reading ‘Meerkat Mail’ ready for his next adventure. We made sure he had everything he would need from sun cream  to ham sandwiches before taking off in our very own virtual plane, landing in Kenya in minutes! After exploring all of the wonderful sights, we then wrote postcards from Sunny detailing his latest destination before writing our own letters to him trying to convince him to fly over to Preston for his next holiday (if you see a meerkat wondering around our village then you’ll know our letters worked!)

We have also been looking closely at traditional African patterns and implementing these on our own designs to make a piece of African bead jewellery. The children painted their patterns then decorated them by threading beads for some extra detail. We think they look great. We then used our understanding of patterns to design and make some traditional African instruments using recycled materials. The children were very creative and resourceful throughout. They then used them to play along to the song Jambo Bwana.

Finally we can’t forget the wonderful nativity the children have been working so hard to learn.  The children did such a fantastic performance, we are all so proud of each and every one of you, well done!

The children were lucky enough to learn how to look after their pet if it became unwell. The took part in pet first aid.
